 Encouragé par le formidable succès de "Amplified Heart", Everything But The Girl s'engage plus en avant dans l'expérimentation en multipliant les emprunts aux divers courants électroniques dominants en Angleterre (trip-hop, jungle, techno). Cependant, leur attachement à une écriture pop classique bride quelque peu leur audace : il n'est pas question de laisser les machines prendre le pouvoir sur les chansons et l'electronica n'est injectée qu'à doses homéopathiques dans leurs compositions. Moins aventureux que Björk et glamoureux que Portishead mais plus accessible que Massive Attack (pour lesquels Tracey Thorn à été invitée à chanter deux chansons sur leur second album "Protection") ou Tricky, Everything But The Girl impose néanmoins avec "Walking Wounded" (1996) sa vision personnelle et décalée de l'electronica mise au service de pop songs à la mélancolie prégnante.
